The Direct Hair Implantion method and the Choi implanter pen.

Some specialists acknowledge the DHI method as the latest method discovered in the field of hair transplantation, while others argue that it is more a commercial choice. Others, however, recognize it by calling it an FUE method with implanter. In reality, these two techniques differentiate themselves in their ways of capillary implantation.

In this section, we will try to explain the true functioning of this method, while remaining objective and giving a clear definition of the DHI method.

The main difference between the FUE technique and the DHI method is based on the creation of the micro channel and hair follicle insertion, which are performed at the same time. These are treated during a process featuring one or two phases and by using the Choi implanter pen, which has a hollow needle connected to a tube and a plunger device.


The use of anaesthetics during hair transplantation.

Before obtaining the hair follicles from the scalp region, called the “donor region”, forming the sites that will receive them in the “receiving region”, local anaesthesia must be performed. As it is injected directly into the scalp, it takes only a few minutes to start working.

For patients who are afraid of syringes and the mild pain they cause, there are other effective alternatives, such as sedation.

How is the DHI method performed?

  1. Using the Choi pen, the specialist inserts the extracted hair follicles in the pen. The follicle is inserted into the hollow needle, which is located in the tip of the pen.
  2. Once done, the needle is inserted into the scalp following an angle ranging from 40 to 45 degrees.

In a single hair transplant session, 2 to 6 Choi implanter and about 15 needles are used. These needles are supplied in various sizes in order to adapt to the features of each hair follicle.

DHI method: advantages.

  • The hair follicles remain less time out of the body, ensuring their better preservation.
  • Increased survival rate of the hair follicles.
  • During the preparation of the receiving region, the hemorrhage is reduced.
  • Traumas are decreased during processing in the implanted region.
  • Very quick recovery of the patient, who can promptly return to his normal daily life.
  • The DHI method allows to avoid having to shave the receiving region.

DHI method: disadvantages.

  • Specialists who wish to obtain permits to use this technique must follow a long training.
  • The surgical procedure is more expensive than other hair transplant methods.
  • It requires more attention from the specialist.
  • Because of liabilities and of the working method, the operator (the specialist) could develop a certain amount of stress which could affect extraction or implantation.

Can the DHI method with Choi pen be used in all patients suffering from baldness?

Since the Choi pen has been designed to be used in capillary baldness treatment at the Kyungpook National University in Korea, experts and specialists in hair transplantation have worked thoroughly in order to gain a better understanding of this method. Studies have shown that not all bald patients are ideal candidates for this technique.

The researchers noted that the original version of the Choi pen allowed better results when used in Asian patients, compared to other ethnicities. This is because of the features of their hairs, which are straight and thick. Other races with curly or thinner hair had more difficulties in inserting the follicle into the tissue.

An incorrect insertion of the hair follicle can produce inappropriate bending, wrong direction and hair trauma. Due to these reasons, experts concluded that not all patients are ideal candidates for using the Choi pen.


Some scholars, however, do not entirely agree with this conclusion. They state that, with enough experience in using the Choi implanter pen, it is possible to use it with any type of hair.

Over recent years, capillary technology has evolved a lot, reaching the point where the Choi pen can be used with any type of hair, guaranteeing successful results for all patients suffering from baldness.
